An “Oscar” for Shangri-La’s Rasa Sayang

Shangri-La's Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa, Penang has won the highly anticipated FIABCI Malaysia Property Award 2008 in the “Resort Development” category considered by many as the "Oscar" of the property industry.

Winners are recognised for not only aesthetics, functionality or size of the project but are positioned as a standard for outstanding property development in the country.  The projects are judged by top real estate professionals and experts in the areas of project description, architecture and design, development and construction, community benefits and environmental impact, as well as finance and marketing.

Shangri-La’s Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa was named the winner for the “Best Resort Development” category in recognition of its meticulous planning to achieve perfection and excellence in its redevelopment project.  The resort has been taken to greater heights by focusing on enhancing, upgrading and modernising its facilities to cater to the changing needs of visitors and guests from all over the world.  At the same time, it has aimed to preserve the natural beauty of the centuries old rain trees and beautifully landscaped gardens.

The owners of the five-star premier deluxe resort took a bold leap forward in December 2004, investing approximately RM100 million to redevelop the entire complex.  The resort reopened in September 2004, with an even higher standard in luxury accommodation, offering international class facilities in an exclusive sanctuary.

The fully integrated resort comprises two main buildings, the 189-room Garden Wing and the 115-room Rasa Wing.  Both wings offer a new benchmark in resort hospitality.  Guests can also indulge in a special wellness concept at CHI, The Spa or choose from a range of vibrant cultural experiences, recreational activities and dining options amid 30 acres of natural splendour in a tranquil tropical retreat.

Desmond Hatton, general manager of Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa, received the award from the royal guest of honour, His Majesty the King of Malaysia at a grand gala dinner held in Kuala Lumpur recently.

"We are extremely happy to have won the prestigious Malaysia Property Award, especially as it follows on the heels of our exciting redevelopment programme, strengthening our repositioning strategy.  It is a great addition to the remarkable compliments that have been received for our brand new and improved products.  The honour is a real tribute as it represents the opportunity to be part of a unique group of the finest in real estate in the country.  While thanking the contractors, vendors and suppliers who have made this great achievement possible, we pledge we will continue the tradition of Shangri-La hospitality and achieve even greater heights in the future.  However, heartfelt gratitude goes particularly to our owners for reinvesting in Rasa Sayang as the grand dame of tourism.  Our members of staff are delighted to receive this prestigious award, and will continue to work towards more awards in the future,” said Mr. Hatton.
